Italy is considered the birthplace of western civilisation. With its amazing weather, rich history and a culture steeped in art, music and food, it’s easy to see why many people would want to study medicine in Italy.

Putting all this aside, the main reason that most people want to study medicine in Italy is because of the possibility of very low tuition fees for their medical courses which are taught in English.

Universities in Italy are divided into private and publicly funded institutions. The quality of the education, however, is comparably high at all institutions of higher education but the fees are also much higher.

On average, undergraduate courses at public institutions cost between €900 and €4,000 per year. Annual fees at private universities typically range from €6,000 to €20,000.

Universities in Italy don’t normally have halls of residence, but will offer accommodation services. Bear in mind that Italy is one of the more expensive EU countries, with living expenses in the north considerably higher than in the south.

Students from the EU do not need a visa to study medicine in Italy. International or non-EU students will need to apply for an Italian study visa at their local Italian embassy or consulate. Non-EU students will also need to apply for a residence permit in the city where you’ll be living within eight days of arrival. This can be done at your local post office in Italy and you’ll be supplied with the relevant application information.

The International Medical Admissions Test, or IMAT, is the test used by medical universities in Italy to assess your suitability for a medical degree course. The test is completed by international students looking to study Medicine in Italy in English.

The IMAT is a written test, which allows you 100 minutes in which to complete 60 multiple-choice questions. The test is comprised of four sections. Section one tests logical reasoning and general knowledge, with 22 multiple-choice questions to assess your problem-solving skills

Sections two, three and four all test your scientific knowledge, with 38 multiple-choice questions on Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths.

The IMAT test takes place in September each year and registration normally takes place in July. Given the number of applicants each year to study medicine in Italy its very important to get a good score on the IMAT Test as this will significantly increase your chances of being offered a place.

At London Medical Academy we have a pre-med course which can help you prepare for the IMAT Test and included in the cost of the course we will also assist you with your applications to medical schools which is done through the Universitaly portal.

Roughly three weeks after the exam, the national ranking will be published. This is the official IMAT ranking list of all candidates ordered by exam results, so you will then findout if your IMAT Test result has got you a place or not.

Students who ranked highly and obtained a place will receive an email and will need to proceed with the enrollment to their medical school in Italy where classes begin in October.
