The history of academia in Bratislava dates back to the 15th century, beginning as Academia Istropolitana founded by Hungarian King Mattias Corvinus. As university education evolved over the centuries and coped with political upheaval, it was in 1919 that Czechoslovak State University in Bratislava was rechristened the Comenius University, named after world-renowned educator Jan Amos Comenius.

At the time, the Comenius University Faculty of Medicine in Bratislava was the only faculty of the new university and admitted 144 students, creating a long tradition of excellence in the teaching of medicine. In 1993, Comenius University in Bratislava added the 6-year program of Medicine and Dentistry in English.

A significant number of Comenius University students are international, creating a diverse environment to study. The Faculty of Medicine educates students to understand that a medical career is more than a profession, but is a mission. So personal and moral development is key.
