You’ve made your decision. You want to be a doctor. Whether it’s been your dream since you were a child, or you’ve recently developed your passion, you’ve got a long journey ahead. However, it’s essential to consider your future. While securing good grades and gaining experience is vital, don’t forget to consider where you study. Most UK students only apply to British medical schools. However, an increasing number are looking at the fantastic opportunities available to study medicine in Europe.

Why study medicine in Europe?

Firstly, there’s less competition. In the UK, places are like gold dust, with around ten applicants for every space available. Applying to study medicine in Europe, especially in Eastern European countries such as Bulgaria, is significantly less competitive for international students.  With no UKCAT, BMAT, GAMSAT or any other stressful exam, the courses are becoming increasingly popular with UK students. Some medical schools do have their own entrance exams, which mostly consist of A-Level chemistry and biology. So, no extra revising necessary. Studying medicine in Europe has looked more appealing since UK tuition fees increased. Though fees in Europe must be self-funded and paid upfront, a course in Bulgaria will be roughly 30% cheaper than British medical schools. Plus, money buys a lot more in Poland or the Czech Republic than it does in the UK. That’s cash which goes straight in your pocket! Considering new doctors typically graduate with £82,000 of debt in the UK, its little wonder Brits are choosing to study medicine in Europe.

But what about the language barrier?

Many European universities are increasingly offering courses in English. Though you might need to brush up on the local language when conversing with patients. Many consider it a bonus – a chance to learn a second language in the heart of a new and exciting culture.
After all, university is supposed to expand your horizon.  Studying medicine in Europe is an opportunity to explore the world before settling down. From unique traditions and customs to dazzling mountains and beaches – studying medicine in Europe has it all!

Sounds good! But does the GMC recognise the degree?

The GMC allows British graduates that have studied medicine in Europe to apply for registration without sitting the PLAB exam. It’s no hassle at all. In fact, around 12.5% of UK doctors graduated overseas. With demand for doctors high, UK students are increasingly opting for a cheaper and more enriching experience studying medicine in Europe.

So how do I go about applying?

Do your research? If English is your only language, take a look at the courses available and work out which one suits you. Evaluate entry requirements and tuition fees that are within your means. Each university will have a department for handling queries, so get in touch with any questions. Don’t forget to prepare for the entry exam, and plan for your relocation.  As places in the UK become ever more competitive, more and more students will look east to study medicine. Given the amazing opportunities, who can blame them? London Medical Academy can offer you support with paperwork to ensure a smooth sailing application process.
