Medical Studies in Croatia – The University of Zagreb School of Medicine

The Zagreb University opened in 1669 as the Jesuit Academy of the Royal Free City of Zagreb. In 1917, the Croatian Parliament adopted the decision to establish the University of Zagreb School of Medicine (UZSM). Finally, in 2005 full-time study began in English, the first university to offer medical studies in Zagreb and all of Croatia.

Today, the Zagreb medical school is a source of great pride for the university and has a strict admission procedure. About 25% of applicants are admitted and, to date, just over 100 students have graduated from the English program. As the oldest and largest institution offering medical studies in Croatia, the University of Zagreb School of Medicine welcomes students from the US, UK, Canada and other English speaking countries. The University of Zagreb School of Medicine has established a fine reputation for providing innovative teaching methods.

In the 1990’s, the medical school increased the study period from five years to six. The University of Zagreb Faculty of Medicine uses methodological approaches, including problem-solving, student-oriented teaching and verification of acquired competencies while moving from large class-based teaching to smaller groups.

The University of Zagreb Faculty of Medicine offers an integrated graduate and undergraduate program in English to earn 360 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) and the professional title of Doctor of Medicine.

Clinical rotations are performed in the final year of study where students can work in health institutions and hospitals in the Republic of Croatia, or work abroad. A Croatian language course is offered to those students who wish to continue practice in Croatia.
