Study Medicine in Lithuania at the Vilnius University

Vilnius University, one of the oldest universities in Europe, was founded in 1579 and boasts a long and eventful history. Political upheaval and war caused the university to have several disruptions. Finally, after Lithuania gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1990, the university resumed as one of the country’s prominent institutions of learning.  The school is home to the Vilnius University Library, founded in 1570 by Jesuits and the oldest library in Lithuania.

The Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine also has a storied history. In the 19th century, it was known for its clinics of therapy, surgery, obstetrics and more. When the university was reestablished in 1990, the Faculty of Medicine was modernized with the establishment of the residency and the merging of the faculties of Medicine and Doctor Retraining. Another restructuring occurred in 2002.

Since 2012, the Vilnius University has provided medical studies in English. Especially attractive to students are the open and personal atmosphere, small learning groups and the opportunity to practice on one of the six largest hospitals of Lithuania. Internships and interaction with patients early on is an important part of the course and prepares students for the real working life of a doctor.

Developing international relationships is a strong focus of the Vilnius University Faculty of Medicine, primarily in the fields of science and academia, including coop­eration with international organizations such as the World Health Organization, the European Commission and UNESCO. It is involved with the ERASMUS exchange program and exchanges students and lecturers with universities­ partners throughout Europe, the USA and others.

Currently around 22,000 students study at Vilnius University, including about 900 international students. With low tuition fees and a low cost of living, the study of Vilnius University medicine is an attractive option for many international students.
